  • I don’t know that I have mentioned this on my blog before . . . but I now wear my hair in its natural state. After a long time of browsing through websites like naturallycurly.com nappturality. . .etc. I made the conscious decision to no longer to chemically alter or straighten my hair. I didn’t decide this because I was having issues with my hair . . . it was actually very healthy. I only did it because I wanted to try something new. The process of going from hair that has been manipulated by creamy crack (aka a relaxer) or heat . . . is called transitioning. Lots of people cut their hair off to rid themselves of the straight pieces in order to transition. I did not. I only ever got a relaxer every 6 to 8 months and they never really took in my hair anyways. No matter how straight a relaxer or the chi flat iron may have gotten it . . . all it would take is one burst of humidity to make the curl pattern come RIGHT back. I remember going to New Orleans last summer. I had just gotten a fresh relaxer. The minute I stepped out of my car into the New Orleans humidity . . . my hair reverted. It instantaneously curled up right before my very eyes. Also I noticed that any time I would get my hair roller set . . . the curls would last for much longer than any straightness I attempted ever would. That being said transitioning was easy for me. I learned different techniques and applied them. Cowashing was the first thing I attempted. Cowashing is simply washing your hair and scalp with conditioner instead of shampoo. Cowashing is more gentle on your hair and does not strip the hair like some shampoos (with sulfates) are prone to do. When I first started doing the natural thing I cowashed almost every day. I don’t do that any more. I’ve learned that my hair doesn’t necessarily need it. Granted I do get my hair wet every day (not always saturated but just moist) . . . I just don’t have to actually wash it nearly as much. My natural haircare regimen goes something like this:

-When I cowash I use a cheapie conditioner usually a V05 moisture milk or Herbal Essence Hello Hydration or Long Term Relationship. Neutrogena Triple Moisture makes a good cowash as well (not that cheap though).

-Lots of people swear by deep conditioning . . . I do it when I can. It’s not a part of my normal routine . . . it’s just something I work in when I have the time (I doubt I even do it monthly). Some people sit under the dryer when they deep condition (apparently the conditioner penetrates through the shaft of the hair better with heat) . . . I do not do this. I just cover my hair in a plastic shower cap and let it condition using only my
