  • The video shows Michael Jackson (MJ) at an appearance with former President Reagan to kick off an anti-drunk driving campaign for high school teenagers in 1984.  The campaign was being advocated by the Reagan administration. Jackson allowed the administration to use his song Beat It as a theme song the campaign.

This video serves as a reminder of the essence of Michael Jackson.  While Jackson had some issues (99.9% of us do) he mostly represented how art can be used for the betterment of man.  Jackson's death while tragic allowed all of us to step back for just a brief moment in the last couple of days.  It allowed us to reflect upon how the arts culture and pure talent can transcend political ideologies and party affiliations.  I think all of us have fondly reflected back on a Jackson moment in our lives.  For me it was the Friday night release of Jackson's Thriller video on MTV December 2 1983.  I along with millions of Americans was truly mesmerized by this.  It's funny that I don't specifically remember any other days as an eighth grader in Meridian Mississippi.  The world of music videos was changed forever.

I was watching with interest the major political cable news shows to see if they would cover Jackson's death or if the Mark Sanford scandal would continue to dominate the news cycle.  It appears that the Governor of South Carolina has been given a brief reprieve.  Cable political heavy weights Chris Matthews Keith Olbermann and Sean Hannity dedicated the majority of their shows to covering the Jackson tragedy.

Sanford and the rest of us have been given a sweet pause.  While this pause will probably only last for a couple of more days it has been good while it lasted.

Thank You MJ for all that you did for us! -  RIP
