After being away from "home" for 48 days (and 11 hours) I've added a new definition:

Home is where you don't have to get out a map every time you want to find a movie theater wash your car or get your danged hair cut.

I have a real crave/fear relationship with home. For my entire youth my family moved frequently. Sometimes across town. Sometimes across the ocean. Sometimes both. Home for me was my grandparents' house in N.C. my home state. We visited only once or twice a year but their old rickety house is the county seat of my memories. Strangers live there now though and I haven't been back for probably 20 years.

As an adult I've continued moving from one house to another one neighborhood to the next city to city to city and back but I've somehow spent this entire time in the same state my family landed in when I was in high school. I never meant to stay. Central N.C. called to my heart and I always figured I'd head back a slow-motion boomerang going home at last.

    But it never happened.

So here I am a month and a half into a summer vacation in what is arguably one of the most beautiful places in the U.S. if not the world. But .... but ... I found myself hungry for flat open vistas and big skies the other day. And rain. And sunsets that take your breath away.

    Crazy.

Don't get me wrong: If I got a job here put down roots I'm sure I could adjust just fine thank you. 80 degrees on a "hot" day? Yep I can go for that. Gladiolus Confederate jasmine and tiger lilies in July? I'm in. But my job is somewhere else and it's a good job as things go these days so home I'll go in a few
